Dental sedation helps patients feel relaxed and comfortable during dental treatment, particularly when anxiety would otherwise make care difficult. It doesn’t replace careful planning, clear communication, or consent. Instead, it supports patients who otherwise struggle to tolerate treatment due to rising fear or anxiety, heightened gag reflex, sensitivity to sound or touch, or the complexity of the procedure involved.

Importantly, sedation does not mean loss of awareness or control. Patients remain responsive and able to communicate, but feel calmer, less tense, and less focused on the sensations of treatment. Many describe the experience as time passing more easily, with reduced emotional and physical stress.

At London Dental Arts, sedation is never used routinely or casually. It’s considered carefully, based on individual need, medical history, and the type of care being planned.

A Specialist-Led Approach to Sedation Dentistry

IV Sedation

Intravenous (IV) sedation is a commonly used option for patients with significant dental anxiety or those undergoing more involved procedures. Medication is administered through a vein via a small cannula, allowing sedation levels to be carefully monitored and controlled throughout the appointment.

Patients receiving IV sedation typically feel deeply relaxed, with reduced awareness of time and surroundings, while remaining conscious and able to respond if needed. Many remember little of the procedure afterwards, which can be particularly helpful for those with strong anxiety linked to previous experiences.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking prescribed medication before your appointment to help you feel calmer and more relaxed during dental treatment. It doesn’t put you to sleep, but it will significantly reduce anxiety and help time feel as though it passes more quickly.

This approach is commonly used for patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety, or for those attending shorter or less complex procedures. You remain awake and able to respond throughout, but often feel drowsy and less aware of the treatment taking place.

As the effects of both oral and IV sedation can extend beyond the appointment, patients will need someone to drive them home. Suitability is always assessed carefully in advance to ensure sedation is provided safely and appropriately.

Is dental sedation safe?

Will I be asleep during dental sedation?

I came across LDA purely by researching via Google. Based on the reviews I decided to contact them and the reviews were accurate. Amazing team and the skill of the dentist was exceptional. From the initial enquiry to completion. I had a tooth implant following a single tooth extraction. Implants are shockingly expensive. I had no idea! However the costs from LDA was comparable with other practices but their service was second to none. It's been well over 6 months since my treatment and I have had no issues whatsoever. My check up last month with my normal dentist and hygienist both said that my teeth are looking great. If you want peace of mind that you are getting the best look no further.

Today I saw Jasmine and Priscilla as the second part of a 2 course treatment which involved various scans and start of deep cleaning on the first visit,also leading to the necessity of today's visit which involved 2 fillings, descaling and the continuation of the deep clean. Jasmine is very knowledgeable and friendly and puts you at ease straight away, explaining in detail the procedure involved and always giving you the opportunity to ask any questions. Before choosing London Dental Arts, I visited three other clinics for consultations. Al was the only one who took the time to properly explain the process, assess whether I’d see real results, and show me similar cases. He was honest, straightforward, and transparent about process & pricing, their initial consultation fee was the lowest of the three, and the overall cost was still one of the most reasonable.Throughout the treatment, Al was attentive, supportive, and patient with all my detailed questions (and there were many!). There is a consistent pleasant atmosphere whenever I visit.I have been coming to Dental Arts for the past year, initially referring myself to the practice with a concern about a damaged premolar tooth.
