Dental anxiety is far more common than many people realise. Studies show that one in three adults suffers with anxiety before visiting the dentist, with some avoiding care altogether as a result. For others, previous experiences, fear of pain, or concerns about loss of control can make even routine appointments feel overwhelming.
At London Dental Arts, we recognise dental anxiety as a genuine and understandable concern, not something to minimise or dismiss. As a specialist-led practice, our approach to dental sedation in South East London is designed to help patients feel safe, supported, and in control, while ensuring treatment can be delivered carefully and predictably.
Whether you are visiting us from Forest Hill, Lewisham, Dulwich, or elsewhere in South East London, sedation dentistry may offer a way to access dental care without fear, overcoming a barrier.
Dental sedation helps patients feel relaxed and comfortable during dental treatment, particularly when anxiety would otherwise make care difficult. It doesn’t replace careful planning, clear communication, or consent. Instead, it supports patients who otherwise struggle to tolerate treatment due to rising fear or anxiety, heightened gag reflex, sensitivity to sound or touch, or the complexity of the procedure involved.
Importantly, sedation does not mean loss of awareness or control. Patients remain responsive and able to communicate, but feel calmer, less tense, and less focused on the sensations of treatment. Many describe the experience as time passing more easily, with reduced emotional and physical stress.
At London Dental Arts, sedation is never used routinely or casually. It’s considered carefully, based on individual need, medical history, and the type of care being planned.
As a sedation dentist in South East London, London Dental Arts operates within a specialist-led clinical framework. This means sedation is integrated directly into treatment planning and is never added as an afterthought.
Before sedation is recommended, we take time to understand your concerns, including what has made dental visits difficult in the past. Then, we’ll explain options clearly and ensure sedation is appropriate for you. Medical history, medications, and overall health are carefully assessed, and patients are given time to ask questions and consider their options.
Essentially, sedation is used to support safe, predictable dentistry, not to rush treatment or bypass careful decision-making.
Here at London Dental Arts, we use two types of dental sedation:
Intravenous (IV) sedation is a commonly used option for patients with significant dental anxiety or those undergoing more involved procedures. Medication is administered through a vein via a small cannula, allowing sedation levels to be carefully monitored and controlled throughout the appointment.
Patients receiving IV sedation typically feel deeply relaxed, with reduced awareness of time and surroundings, while remaining conscious and able to respond if needed. Many remember little of the procedure afterwards, which can be particularly helpful for those with strong anxiety linked to previous experiences.
Oral sedation involves taking prescribed medication before your appointment to help you feel calmer and more relaxed during dental treatment. It doesn’t put you to sleep, but it will significantly reduce anxiety and help time feel as though it passes more quickly.
This approach is commonly used for patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety, or for those attending shorter or less complex procedures. You remain awake and able to respond throughout, but often feel drowsy and less aware of the treatment taking place.
As the effects of both oral and IV sedation can extend beyond the appointment, patients will need someone to drive them home. Suitability is always assessed carefully in advance to ensure sedation is provided safely and appropriately.
Sedation dentistry may be helpful for patients who:
Not every anxious patient needs sedation, and not every procedure requires it. Our role as clinicians is to help you understand whether sedation is appropriate for you, and to explore alternatives where possible.
One of the aims of sedation dentistry at London Dental Arts is not simply to “get through” treatment, but to help patients rebuild confidence in dental care over time.
Many patients find that with calm experiences and clear communication, anxiety gradually reduces. Sedation may be used initially to support necessary care, with the longer-term goal of helping patients feel more comfortable attending future appointments.
This measured, supportive approach reflects our wider philosophy of dentistry, planned for the long term, not short-term fixes.

Read MoreDental sedation is widely used and considered safe when provided by appropriately trained clinicians following strict clinical guidelines. At London Dental Arts, sedation is only offered after a full medical assessment to ensure it is suitable for the individual patient. Monitoring is maintained throughout the appointment to prioritise safety and comfort at all times.
No. Unlike under general anaesthesia, patients remain conscious and can respond, but feel deeply relaxed and less aware of the procedure. With IV sedation in particular, many patients have little or no memory of the treatment afterwards.
The type of sedation recommended depends on factors such as anxiety levels, medical history, and the complexity of treatment. Oral sedation may be appropriate for mild to moderate anxiety or shorter procedures, while IV sedation is often better suited to patients with significant dental anxiety or those requiring more involved care. This is discussed carefully during consultation.
Sedation can be used for many types of dental treatment, from routine procedures to more complex care, provided it is clinically appropriate. Suitability depends on factors such as the patient’s medical history, anxiety level, and the nature of the treatment being carried out. At London Dental Arts, sedation is only recommended when it supports safe, effective care and is always planned on an individual basis.
If anxiety has been holding you back from dental treatment, support is available. As a specialist-led sedation dentist in South East London, London Dental Arts offers IV and oral sedation delivered carefully, safely, and with your comfort in mind.
The first step is an unhurried conversation, where concerns can be discussed openly and options explained clearly.
