A dental emergency can be a real worry. It can be a serious injury, or it could be something that doesn’t look too serious, so you’re not sure if you’re overreacting. However, dental issues can become extremely painful if not treated, so if something has gone wrong, then it is far better to get it treated by a forest hill dentist than to leave it to get worse. Sometimes though, this can be easier said than done, and many people find that their dental emergencies happen at the most inconvenient times, like in the middle of the night or when they’re miles away from a dentist. In this case, there are some things you can do to help ease the pain before you can get to see your dentist. Whether you have fallen and knocked a tooth out, dislodged a crown, or just eaten the wrong food, there is always something you can do, so don’t panic; just read these tips for emergency dental care.
If you have blood in your mouth, then you should rinse it with warm water, and then just as you would to a cut on your skin, you should apply pressure to where it’s bleeding from with a clean cloth or cold compress, which should help to slow the bleeding.
Toothaches are the worst and particularly in the middle of the night when all you want to do is sleep, and it’s difficult to get an emergency dental appointment. Toothache can be caused by many things, from gum infections and cavities, so it’s important that you do see a dentist and not just ignore the pain as this could result in more damage to your teeth and gums and long-term pain or discomfort. If you are experiencing pain in your tooth but can’t get to a dentist, then, first of all, rinse your mouth with warm but not hot water, take two ibuprofen tablets to help alleviate the pain, followed by two paracetamol tablets if the pain is still there after three houses. Do this until you can see your dentist.
When you get food stuck in your teeth, such as nuts or seeds, this can encourage the growth of bacteria and can result in a cavity or gum infection. If this is something that happens to you regularly, then you should see your dentist find out why. However, if you have something stuck in your teeth and can’t get it out and can’t get to a dentist, then you should try to remove the object with your fingers. You could gently floss your teeth or try using a pair of tweezers to remove the object. If you manage to remove the object and then experience pain or bleeding, then apply pressure to the affected area.
A small crack in your tooth can spread over time, so don’t ignore it. Again if this happens to you when you can’t get to a dentist, then rinse your mouth out with warm water and put a cold pack on your face over the damaged tooth. Then resist all temptation to play with the damaged tooth.
Even if you can’t get there, you can call your dentist in Forest Hill for advice and reassurance, so don’t be afraid to do this.
